Thanks Kat, I totally agree. Any sort of national survey is going to be rife with error. We all saw how inaccurate the election polling was, and the CDC poll uses much the same methodology. People may also be reluctant to identify as transgender or non-binary on a government survey, particularly in this administration! I think that's a strong argument. Like you, I believe the true number is both much higher and ultimately unknowable. But there's a need to understand the population as well, for all sorts of reasons such as allocation of resources, and political power.
